"We see your democracy soaked in blood"

    Swiss Info has this report:

Lukashenko, who faces tougher Western sanctions if a March 19 election which he is heavily favoured to win is denounced as unfair, vowed to take whatever steps were necessary to prevent Western-inspired subversion of his administration.

Before the president's three-hour-long televised speech, academic Alexander Kozulin, one of two opposition candidates, was beaten and driven away to a police station.

He was released in the early evening as the candidate backed by most opposition groups, Alexander Milinkevich, addressed the rally outside a sports arena.

"Shame! Freedom! Milinkevich!" said demonstrators waving the banned red-and-white Belarussian nationalist flag and sporting Milinkevich's dark blue campaign colours.

"The majority is with us. We have the strength. We will win!" the bearded Milinkevich shouted to supporters, whose ranks have been thinned in recent months by legislation with heavy penalties for illegal assembly.

In his speech, Lukashenko said his stewardship had boosted living standards. Western countries, he said, had no right to give lessons to his former Soviet state.

"It is not for (the West) to teach us about human rights. Let them deal with their own affairs. They have plunged the entire Middle East into blood. We see your democracy soaked in blood," he said.

What he says about western 'democracies' is true. That does not make him right. He as well as Bush and all the other 'democratic' and less 'democratic' leaders and thinkers would have us believe there is only black and white, with us or against us, us vs them. We should stand firm and say: we are neither with you nor with them. One day they will be forced to listen to us.

Indeed, Jez, i've always stated that things aren't black and white. Along with the fact of course, that i've always opposed our leaders involvement with brutal dictatorships and human rights abusers.

As you say, we are neither with one brutal dictator, or with a war criminal, or with terrorists, or murderers etc..
