    Drug trial relatives furious

Today's Guardian reports on an inquiry being launched following 6 healthy drug trial volunteers ending up in intensive care, obviously, relatives of the 6 are furious:

Nothing had been ruled out, said the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), leading the investigation. But although the police were still nominally involved, it was clear that a criminal act, such as deliberate tampering with the experimental medication, was unlikely. Scientists were left contemplating the possibility that the dangerous side effects of this drug in humans had not been, and perhaps could not be, detected in the normal animal trials.

It certainly seems logical to say that animals and humans could show different reactions to drugs. This is one major problem with animal testing.

Why are the MHRA investigating? There needs to be independent investigation. The MHRA are not independent of the pharmaceutical industry, and were presumably (?) somehow involved in approving this Phase I study.

Thanks for the comment bevvy, indeed, I believe there should be an independent investigation.
