Doncaster - Labour mayor in fraud probe

    From the Yorkshire Post:

THE elected mayor of Doncaster last night denied he had personally intervened in a planning application over a potential housing development which was settled in favour of a prominent Labour-supporting businessman.

A series of emails between town's planning officials, obtained by the Yorkshire Post, confirm the mayor's involvement and his personal view in favour of Mr Thompson, who publicly supports Labour and also provided land for a major council-backed recycling project officially opened by Mayor Winter in 2002. The proposed development involves a privately-owned field in Hatfield, near Doncaster, potentially a prime site for new housing. A letter to the owner, also obtained by the Yorkshire Post, reveals that Mr Thompson was proposing to buy the land for £800,000, if planning permission was granted.

According to the Doncaster Council Chamber website, Labour has 29 seats there, the Lib Dems have 12 seats, the Tories and the Alliance of Independent Members have 9 seats each, and the Community Group has 5 seats. See all recent "A Logical Voice" posts
