    Altruism comes naturally.

I can just imagine the fits Randians will throw over this. On second thought, they'll likely just ignore the facts when they get in the way. From the BBC:

Infants as young as 18 months show altruistic behaviour, suggesting humans have a natural tendency to be helpful, German researchers have discovered.

In experiments reported in the journal Science, toddlers helped strangers complete tasks such as stacking books.

Young chimps did the same, providing the first evidence of altruism in non human primates.

Altruism may have evolved six million years ago in the common ancestor of chimps and humans, the study suggests.

This article made an interesting read DJEB, it's certainly pleasing to think that people are born with that sense of wanting to help others, it's something that i've long considered to be the case. Unfortunately, as we all get older, some develop that sense that they need not sacrifice anything for others.

What you describe is conditioning, I think. If you see a person lying in the street in a big city, do you stop to help them and see if they are ok? How about the same person in a small town? Would your reaction be different?

Well, personally, i'd have to say that if I saw someone lying on the street, i'd have to go and ask if they were ok, wherever they were. I've certainly done so in the past.
