Widespread and systematic torture and abuse means Britain has to act

According to this article, from icBerkshire, three captives at America's Guantanamo torture chamber have been given the go-ahead to seek a High Court order requiring Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to petition for British residents' releases. This news is in response to further reports about widespread and systematic torture and abuse, in particular, the UN report condemning a whole host of human rights law violations by the US. Honour Bound – To Defend Freedom

Not everyone knows that the staff who operate the notorious US Gulag at Guantanamo Bay greet each other with the words ’Honour Bound’ with the response ’To Defend Freedom’. I am not making this up. The US authorities think this is good practice. It is actually the motto for this hell-hole. For those of you who do not know whether to laugh or cry, it is worth taking a look at the articles written by Clive Stafford Smith(see link), a lawyer who represents some of the victims of the US camp. The camp and its practices are roundly condemned in a UN report.

It is fair to say that Guantanamo is a microcosm of just how little the US military and securocrats understand about any concept of freedom (or honour). Daily incidents in Iraq and, one suspects, in the murk of Afghanistan, illustrate the point. My own feeling is that there is a deep vein of racism about American attitudes to Middle Eastern or Arab people. This goes some way to explaining the madness of the statements and ‘arguments’ defending the atrocities committed by US soldiers and mercenaries in Iraq. It is also behind the ease and crassness with which the human rights of Arab people are dismissed from consideration by the US Administration spin machine.

Another case in point is the most recent scandal over Abu Ghraib. The Pentagon described the latest batch of photographs as disgraceful and disgusting. What about the practices depicted in the photographs. Aren’t they disgraceful and disgusting. They also trotted out the hoary old chestnut about isolated incidents and ‘bad apples’. Until the US Authorities take some responsibility for their own misdemeanours and downright atrocities they will continue to earn and deserve the scorn of the entire civilised world. Honour bound? Freedom? Black(very black) humour.

Thanks for your comments Tony. I'll certainly be looking up the "Honour bound" and "to defend freedom" references.

How long before the Bush spinners(Fox News et al) begin to say how the civil war and continuing collapse in Iraq is really a victory for US policy? It’s a difficult one for them, even for Condoleeza Rice with her best rose-tinted spectacles on. How does the spiralling carnage indicate a success for the fantasies about ’freedom and democracy’? I suspect they will portray it as a sectarian conflagration which really had nothing to do with the US occupation and subsequent incompetence/brutality. Not our fault - they wouldn’t be helped. Winston Churchill described Iraq as ’an ungrateful volcano’ in an attempt to wash his hands of it long ago.

Mission Accomplished? Sorry, George, you’ve already done that one.
