    Of blasphemy and death threats

In light of the controversy surrounding the Mohammed cartoons, and the resulting uproar by some on the rabid right to claim that they are interested in free speech, I thought it worthy reminding some people about this, as reported in the Times, from January 2005:

Yesterday security guards continued to monitor the North London home of Roly Keating, the Controller of BBC Two, who received threats from protesters. The homes of six other BBC executives were also targeted after an evangelical Christian group posted the addresses and telephone numbers on its website. Fewer than two million viewers watched Jerry Springer — The Opera despite the furore. The BBC logged a record 45,000 pre-transmission complaints, but received just 350 calls yesterday in response to the unedited screening on BBC Two on Saturday evening.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the people jumping on the free speech bandwagon (although in some cases its far more about jumping onto a bandwagon of hate, judging by some comments i've read from some right wingers this week) were the very same people calling the BBC to complain about the screening of "Jerry Springer - The Opera", and issuing death threats to BBC executives. Over here in France, it's the die-hard republicans, left and right who are shrieking about free speech while they attack those who dare to criticise Israel, calling them anti-semites, and applauding when these 'anti-semites' are sued under laws which forbid 'inciting religious or racial hatred'. I sometimes marvel at how close Britain and France are, and yet how much their citizens are ignorant what goes one in their respective countries...
