    Brown shows his authoritarian side

According to this article, from today's Guardian, Gordon Brown, our joint prime minister, has claimed that id cards will make Britian safer, he is also pushing the "glorifying terrorism" offence, and has brought up an extension to 28 days detention for "terror suspects" without charge once again. Of course, the Blairite plans to extend detention to 90 days were defeated:

"I want to remind the country that the terrorist threat has not diminished and will not diminish until we defeat it," he said. The Government's independent reviewer of anti-terror laws has said compulsory ID cards would have only "limited value" in the fight against terrorism.

Of course, id cards in Spain did nothing to prevent the Madrid bombings.
