Guantanamo the "gulag of our time"

    ABC News has this report:

Amnesty International branded the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay a human rights failure Wednesday, calling it "the gulag of our time" as it released a report that offers stinging criticism of the United States and its detention centers around the world.

Blissful ignorance. Do they know what the gulag actually was, and its sheer scale?

Blissful ignorance indeed. Do you not know what the phrase "of our time" means? Also, I do know you like to pretend that no human rights abuses occur at Gitmo.

Does the phrase "of our time" mean that AI's comment had absolutely no realistic foundation whatsoever? Would you say that Bush is the Hitler "of our time"?

The answer to both your questions is a non-contradictory no. Again, you don't seem to know what the phrase "of our time" means.

I'll put it another way. AI could have said that Guantanamo is the Lubyanka or Spandau "of our time", or any other appropriate comparison. Does anyone in that body comprehend the scale of the gulag system?

AI's comments make perfect sense. The gulag is well know - more so than Lubyanka or Spandau.

As for AI understanding human rights abuses, I dare say that they comprehend a great deal more than you. In fact, they are able to comprehend when their own states commit or support those abuses, which is something you have a hard time getting, it seems.
