Blair likely to dump EU vote

If, as expected, the French people reject the EU constitution in their referendum today, then it will be very difficult for Blair to justify holding a similar vote in Britain. This report from the Guardian:

The Prime Minister is braced for the future of Europe to be plunged into turmoil for 12 months amid arguments over the crucial treaty. Whitehall sources also said that they are ready for fierce clashes with the French government, expected to wreak revenge for their expected defeat by blocking British plans for the accession of Turkey and for economic liberalisation.

This is gonna be exciting for politcal junkies. It is so hard to know what most EU people really want to do with Turkey - I have no proof , but I suspect many leaders who have come out in favor of Turkey being admitted have only done so when they think they can rely on other states or referenda to defeat their plans.

A while ago - I read the Haldeman Diaries and B. Haldeman made note that President Nixon was pleased he did not have the votes for his Family Assitance Plan- so he could come out for it, secure in the knowledge that it was gonna be defeated- Haledman noted that the it couldn't fit in the budget - but by appearing to come out in favor of it, Nixon could get a few notches on his liberal domestic creds- before the Haldeman diaries revealed this- Pat Moynihan used to cite Nixon's 'support' for the FAP in defense of Nixon's domestic policies- maybe Moynihan knew the real story and was merely being a Machiavel himself in citing Nixon, so as win over some Repubs in recent times.

Anyway, maybe similar manuvers are going on with M. Chirac and Mr. Blair.
