Liverpool calls for national chewing gum tax

I believe I mentioned this proposal in the past for a 1p tax on chewing gum to help clear up the mess it causes, when people spit it out onto the street. I believe it's agood idea. This article, from the Guardian:

Councillors at Liverpool city council have voted to lobby the government, calling for a 1p levy on every packet of gum. The proposal would help to recoup some of the estimated £150m a year it costs local authorities to clean up discarded gum. The average price of a piece of gum is 3p - but it costs at least 10p to remove it from pavements.
