    Media crackdown in Kyrgyzstan

    From today's Guardian: Pre-election crackdown for nervous Kyrgyzstan

    Many opposition politicians have been barred from standing, and youth and opposition activists say they plan demonstrations to bring about a so-called "tulip revolution". The opposition fears that the president, Askar Akayev, will use the election to create a pliant parliament. He could then change the constitution, enabling him to stand for re-election for a third term or engineer the appointment of a loyal successor.
