72% turnout figure was just "a guess"

According to this article, a spokesman for Iraq's electoral commission has admitted that he didn't really have a clue what the actual turnout figure was, and that the 72% figure widely touted yesterday was just "a guess". See all recent "A Logical Voice" posts

72%, not 72%. The issue is a red herring anyway. It is given attention in and attempt to give a post hoc excuse for the invasion and continuing occupation.

I'd certainly agree that considering the direction the ongoing war in Iraq is taking, holding these so called "democratic elections" provides a useful diversion.

First the Fall of Baghdad, then "Mission Accomplished," then the capture of Saddam, then the seige of Fallujah I, then transfer of power, then seige of Fallujah II, now the elections. Each one was supported to be the big turning point after which all violence would end and figs would spring magically from the dunes. I think I see a pattern here.

Perhaps the pattern is promoting more death and destruction?
